Installing Claws Mail 3.3.1 in Gutsy

As I complained yesterday, the latest version of Claws Mail available in Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy is 2.10. That is disappointingly low compared to the current 3.3.1 version.

Thanks to an extremely helpful comment on my original article, I now know how to install the newer version.

We are going to add their unofficial repository to our sources, then upgrade as normal.

First, open up a terminal. Enter ‘wget http://colino.net/colin.publickey‘. This retrieves the public, assuring safety. Now add the key using ‘sudo apt-key add colin.publickey’ (while in the same directory).

Back up sources.list, located in /etc/apt/sources.list, by running ‘sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.clawsbackup’. Now let’s edit it to add the repository. Open it in a text editor.  The default, or I use nano for little edits like this.

At the end, put the following on a new line: ‘deb http://www.claws-mail.org/ubuntu/gutsy/ ./’. Run ‘sudo apt-get update’ to inform the system that you added it.

Now, I prefer to use synaptic for this. Open it up. On the left bottom, press ‘Origin’. You should see the new repository in the list twice, once for main and once for universe. Open universe and there are all the Claws Mail packages. Click on ‘claws-mail’ and upgrade it to get the newer version. Note that you can also get all of the new plugins now. this is great, as I’ve heard that the amazing plugins are a major strngth of Claws Mail.
