I just got the Firefox 3 beta 5, uploaded a whole hour ago to gutsy-backports!
The biggest things I notice are that Firefox starts and closes *way* faster than it used to. The entire browser seems faster in fact.
Here is how to get the latest, and last, beta:
NOTE: THIS IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. THIS IS A BETA, AND CAN BREAK YOU MACHINE. ONLY USE THIS IF YOU ARE WILLING TO EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS (although you probably won’t).
- Backup your profile: ‘cp -R ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla-backup’ (note the capital R)
- Add this repository to your ‘/etc/apt/sources.list’. Note you need to sudo to do this.
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-backporters/ubuntu gutsy main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-backporters/ubuntu gutsy main
- Now either do a sudo apt-get update or just open the Update Manager and check for it, they should be there.
- You now have the awesomeness of Firefox 3 Beta 5 on your computer!
I can see plenty of changes (positive) already. The biggest problem is a bug that makes the dropdown box animation really bad with Compiz Fusion (it uses the new window animation now…). Supposedly a patch will be applied very soon. In the meantime it isn’t unbearable.
